Food for thought

As I am sure all of you know, I am a longtime listener of WNYC's RadioLab. One of the newer podcasts, Afterlife, was really profound, especially as I participate in my first rotation at a nursing home (or I guess the PC term is long-term care facility). Jad and Robert offer 11 vignetteson the nature death--the many ways that it can be defined, how it is dealt with. Here is the link--http://www.wnyc.org/shows/radiolab/ I found the piece about the woman in an unresponsive coma that was able to respond to the command to imagine playing tennis, thereby showing herself via MRI, to be, in fact, conscious, to be the most...chilling.

The other thing that seemed appropriate to my current clinical experience was a movie that I watched with my parents over the weekend, called Young@Heart. It is a documentary about a group of elderly people that are in a chorus that performs modern rock and pop songs. It is quite touching.

Just thought I'd throw those out there.

  1. I love that movie! And old People!! I'm sure it sucks getting old and having someone wipe your butt for you - but there's something really great about learning about life experiences through the eyes of old folks... When I was teaching dance at a nursing home it was like they hadn't heard music in years - the way that simple things could bring so much joy into their eyes - kind of magic
